Why buying a contact list is always a bad idea

When it comes to launching email marketing campaigns quickly and inexpensively, buying or leasing a contact list may seem like the most practical solution.

But, although it may seem useful in the short term, this practice can have irreversible negative consequences for your brand and your results.

If you are working with email marketing, you need to understand why this strategy is, without exception, a very bad idea.

Buying or leasing a listing: how is it done?

Before going into the reasons, let's clarify the three common ways to build a database:

  1. Buy a list:
Many companies sell databases whose origin is dubious. Most of them do not have the explicit consent of the contacts to receive your messages.
  2. Lease a list:
Similar to buying it, but with the difference that the provider sends the campaigns for you. They often offer you HTML design and shipping for a suspiciously low price.
  3. Organic growth (the only valid option):
It consists of building your base by means of opt-inContacts provide their data in exchange for something of value (exclusive content, participation in an event, discounts, etc.) and explicitly authorize you to send them communications.
  1. You are in breach of privacy laws

Since the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, buying or leasing contact databases without explicit consent is a serious infringement.

And it is not only in Europe. Countries such as Brazil (with the LGPD), Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Chile have strengthened their legislation. In the United States, laws such as the CAN-SPAM Act prohibit the sending of messages without clear prior authorization.

🔒 What does "consent" mean?
That the person freely accepted receive your messages. A consent given to a third party is not valid. Much less a purchased listing where no one knows you.

👉 Real example: In 2023, a French company was fined €250,000 for using a purchased database without proof of consent. There was no security breach, just malpractice.

  1. They don't know you and don't want to hear from you

Sending messages to someone who doesn't know you is like calling strangers on the phone to sell them something. Invasive, annoying and unethical.

  • Many will mark your messages as spam.
  • Others will be terminated immediately.
  • Some may even complain to a data authority.

This deteriorates your brand image. And the worst thing: you lose opportunities with people that yes they could have given you permission... if you had done things right.

🎯 Contrary success story:
Chilean fintech Fintual grew their contact base organically by using valuable content (guides, simulators, blogs) as a hook to get users to sign up. In less than a year they doubled their open rate without buying a single address.

  1. You damage your shipping reputation

Every time someone marks your message as spam, service providers such as Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo take note.

  • If you accumulate negative reports, your domain goes into the blacklists.
  • Your delivery rates plummet.
  • Even legitimate users may stop receiving your campaigns.

📉 Direct consequence: It doesn't matter how good your campaign is, if it doesn't make it to the inbox, no good.

💡 On platforms such as. MasterBase®The sending reputation is carefully managed. Buying lists goes against the whole system of protection and good integrated practices.

  1. It is likely that you have experienced it yourself

Have you received an email from a company you don't know, offering you a service you didn't ask for?

  • Did you open it?
  • Did you read it with interest?
  • Or did you mark it as garbage?

You have already lived that experience. You know what it feels like. So why do it to others?

The email marketing works when it is based on trust and valuenot in interruption or deception.

  1. Return on investment is lower than it may seem

Buying a base seems economical. But the results are poor:

  • Very low opening rate (less than 5% on average).
  • Lots of rebounds.
  • Collateral damage: bad reputation, blockages and loss of time.

📊 Fact: According to research from DMA UK, purchased lists perform 7 times less than organically built lists. And the unsubscription rate is up to 20 times greater.

  1. There are better ways to build your audience

Instead of buying, focus on acquisition strategies based on value content:

  • Whitepapers
  • Webinars
  • Free courses
  • Downloadable eBooks
  • Free consultations

Every action in which a user voluntarily hands over his or her email address is a seed of trust.

🌱 Example: The software company HubSpot never bought bases. He built his entire audience with useful content, guides and free tools. Today he is a world leader in inbound marketing.

Conclusion

Buying or leasing contact lists is against the law, damages your brand, reduces your deliverability and leaves you far short of real email marketing results.
